Isopropyl Myristate (IPM, CAS No. 110-27-0) is a widely used saturated fatty acid ester synthesized via the esterification of myristic acid and isopropyl alcohol. At room temperature, it appears as a colorless to slightly yellowish transparent oily liquid with almost no odor. It has a density of approximately 0.85–0.86 g/cm³. While insoluble in water, it is miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol, mineral oil, and vegetable oils. Chemically, it is stable and resistant to oxidative rancidity.
Major Application Areas
1. Cosmetics & Personal Care
Emollient: Used in creams, lotions, sunscreens, foundations, lipsticks, eyeshadows, makeup removers, and conditioners to enhance skin feel and moisturization, while relieving skin tightness.
Penetration Enhancer: Facilitates the absorption of active ingredients to boost skincare efficacy.
Solvent / Dispersant: Dissolves oil-soluble components and ensures uniform dispersion within the formulation system.
Fixative: Acts as a fixative in perfumes to extend the longevity of the fragrance.
2. Pharmaceutical Industry
Serves as a base and penetration enhancer for topical ointments and liniments. It improves the efficiency of transdermal drug absorption and is suitable for transdermal patches as well as ultrasound/iontophoresis combination therapies.
3. Industrial & Other Uses
Industrial Solvent / Lubricant: Applied in precision machinery lubrication, as a solvent for pesticide technical materials, and as an additive for inks and coatings.
Food Additive: In accordance with GB 2760 regulations, it may be used as a flavoring agent in food.
